Department of Neurology Leadership Changes

A message from Michael J. Stamos, MD, Interim Dean, UC Irvine School of Medicine

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to announce that Steven Small, PhD, MD, will step down as chair of the Department of Neurology, effective August 1, 2017. Tahseen Mozaffar, MD, will serve as interim chair while a national search is launched to identify candidates for the permanent appointment.

Dr. Small will take a new leadership role in the UC Irvine School of Medicine to create a new innovation center on our medical center campus. In this leadership role, he will be collaborating with other university leaders to bring together scientists, industry partners, entrepreneurs, clinicians and students to improve the practice of medicine and surgery.

Dr. Small came to UC Irvine from the University of Chicago seven years ago and helped grow the department’s clinical, research and academic portfolio, including tremendous growth in the department’s faculty and resident cohorts. He established a strong neurocritical care team with coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, created the neurology clinical trials unit with 65 active studies, and developed numerous new fellowship programs, including programs in stroke, neurocritical care, neuro-oncology, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders and geriatric neurology.

In his new role, Dr. Small will continue to support the institution’s development as a national and international leader in innovative approaches to improving patient care through clinical and academic excellence.

Dr. Mozaffar has been with the UC Irvine School of Medicine since 2000. He is a professor of neurology and orthopaedic surgery, director of the UC Irvine-MDA ALS and Neuromuscular Center, director of the department of Neurology’s residency program and vice chair for education. Dr. Mozaffar is also chair of Institutional Review Board A.

After receiving his MD degree in 1989 from The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, Dr. Mozaffar completed a neurology residency at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis and a fellowship in neuromuscular diseases at Washington University in St. Louis.

Please join me in thanking both Dr. Small and Dr. Mozaffar for their leadership.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Stamos, MD
