Shalini Shah, MD, named director, pain management

Scott Engwall, MD, MBA, Chair, Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care, Medical Director, Perioperative Services, UC Irvine Health

Dear colleagues,

After a national search process, I am pleased to announce that Shalini Shah, MD, has been appointed director of pain management. Dr. Shah has accepted the position and her appointment began Aug. 1, 2017. She will oversee all pain services at UC Irvine Medical Center and Gottschalk Medical Plaza.

Dr. Shah has been responsible for an impressive variety of teaching, speaking, research and clinical activities within UC Irvine Health and the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care. She is actively involved in activities within her field. She has been elected to serve as district director for the California Society of Anesthesiologists as well as being invited to serve on the Committee of Pain Medicine with the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Shah has also been actively working on the ever-growing opioid epidemic.

She has established a regional and national reputation in her field through speaking engagements, publications and research. Dr. Shah was recently awarded the American Society of Regional Anesthesia Chronic Pain Research Grant, one of the largest pain grants from a pain society. The research grant focuses on the therapeutic use of Botox® on pediatric patients with chronic migraine headaches. Dr. Shah was featured among an annual list of OC’s most impressive young entrepreneurs, executives and professionals in OC Metro’s Forty Under Forty in 2013.

Dr. Shah joined UC Irvine Health in October 2012 after completing her residency at Weill Cornell University in anesthesiology and fellowships in both adult and pediatric pain management at the Harvard University Hospitals (Boston Children's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's). She is board certified in both anesthesiology and pain medicine and was the first fellowship-trained pediatric pain medicine specialist practicing in Orange County. Dr. Shah serves to fill the important gap in Orange County and nationally of pediatric patients with chronic pain, as they are a significantly underserved population.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Shah on her new role.

Sincerely,

Scott Engwall, MD, MBA
