University Physicians & Surgeons is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. William E. Karnes as associate clinical professor in the Division of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Karnes is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist who specializes in disease of the gastrointestinal tract, including inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers, esophageal disease and colorectal cancer. He has performed more than 16,000 colonoscopies during his career.

Dr. Karnes conducts translational research on colon cancer prevention, emphasizing regular screenings, especially among groups at high risk for developing the disease. His research interests include proliferative and apoptotic signal transduction in colon carcinogenesis, novel molecular markers or risk and targets of therapy in colon cancer.

Dr. Karnes received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, where he also fulfilled an internal medicine residency. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at UCLA and a research fellowship in molecular biology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he became an associate professor in the division of gastroenterology and maintained an active NIH-funded program in colorectal cancer. Most recently, he worked at a private practice in Santa Barbara, Calif., and held a clinical assistant professorship at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Karnes is a fellow of the American Gastroenterology Society and is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Association for Cancer Research—among other organizations. Dr. Karnes will see patients at the H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center in Orange and Gottschalk Medical Plaza in Irvine.
